The Credit Check
Credit Referencing
If you were lending somebody some money, you’d want to be certain that you’d see your money again, that the person borrowing the money was likely and realistically able to pay you back. Similarly, lenders want to be sure that you are likely to repay the money they lend you, via a loan, credit card or finance agreement.
They will judge how likely you are to pay them back using a variety of means. These include:
Your credit card, finance agreement or loan application form which will inform them of your job and salary and your name and address.
Your credit file held by a Credit Reference Agency. This will inform them of any unpaid debts, County Court Judgements (CCJs) or bankruptcies that you may have and will reveal how up-to-date you are with payments.
If a friend you were lending money to had borrowed money from another friend but hadn’t yet paid them back, or took a long time to pay them back, you’d be more likely to refuse to lending them any money. Similarly, lenders are less likely to lend you money/give you credit if you are behind with other payments or have unpaid debts.
Adverse information, such as a County Court Judgments, a bankruptcy or a defaulted account, stays on the record for six years. However, you can repair your credit file by either paying your CCJs and getting a certificate of satisfaction added to your file, or by proving that you have special circumstances.
