Discover How To Repair Your Credit History
If you have a poor credit history and, as a result, find yourself being turned down when applying for loans or finance, you need to clear your name and repair your credit file.
So how do you repair your credit history?
STEP ONE: Contact a credit reference agency.
Visit www.equifax.co.uk or www.experian.co.uk or www.callcredit.co.uk
These hold details relating to borrowing for every individual who has ever had credit and they will be able to assist you.
STEP TWO: Get a copy of your credit file from the Credit Reference Agency and uncover the sources of the problem.
For example, you may have a broken credit agreement or may have a County Court Judgement (CCJ). If so, this will be recorded on your credit file. CCJs can not be erased from the database entirely until they are discharged (mostly after six years). CCJs can be marked as ‘satisfied’ if you pay them off, but they cannot be completely erased. Therefore, you should beware of credit repair companies that claim they can clear CCJs from your credit file. Nobody can do this. What can be done is to pay off a CCJ and mark this on the file as ‘paid/satisfied’ so lenders can see you’ve no outstanding debts.
STEP THREE: Ask the credit agency how you can contact the county court concerned for a ‘Certificate of Satisfaction’, if you have any CCJs on your credit file that you want dealt with. Then contact the county court to obtain the certificate and follow instructions provided by the credit agency.
STEP FOUR: If applicable, a “Notice Of Correction” can be added to your credit file, detailing any special circumstances that worked towards causing your debt, be it a long illness or sudden redundancy. You may even find that you have not been in debt, and have certainly left any debts unpaid. Ask the credit agency if your circumstances fit the criteria for receiving a correction notice.
STEP FIVE: If applicable, a ‘Disassociation’ note can be added to your credit file. This may be required if your file is adversely affected by a debt-ridden family member who shares the same residence and surname as you. Ask the credit agency if your circumstances fit the criteria for receiving a ‘disassociation’ notice.
