Sample Credit Repair Letters

As a consumer, you have rights to check the information credit reference agencies hold on you. Particularly if you have been refused credit for up to £25,000. In this instance you are legally obliged to know the name and address of credit reference agencies who've provided information on you to the lender. If this happens you can write to the lender within 28 days of hearing from them, to request those details. The lender is legally obliged to give you these details within 7 days of receiving your letter. However, if a credit reference agency was not used, the lender is not obliged to reply.

Here is an example of a letter to send to your lender to enquire about the details of the credit reference agency.

Your address

Date

Dear Lender [insert company name],

I am writing under Section 157 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. Please can you let me have the name and address details of any credit reference agency you have used that has supplied you with information about me. I expect a reply within seven working days of your receipt of this letter.

Yours faithfully

Your name

You may wish to obtain a copy of your credit reference file, especially if you are refused credit and wish to repair your credit history.

Example of a letter to the credit reference agencies to request a copy of your credit reference file.

You can obtain a copy of your credit report online. This costs £9.95 and can be done here.

Alternatively, write to the agency with payment £9.95, giving your full name, address and postcode, plus other addresses you've lived at during the past six years. If you are trading as a partnership or sale trader, also provide your business name and address, as these details will be separate.

Dear Credit Reference Agency

I am writing under Section 158(1) of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. Please send me a copy of my file. I enclose a (postal order/cheque) for £9.95.

If you are leaving home, moving home, divorcing or separating and wish to request a disassociation from others sharing the same name and address as you, you'll need to send a letter to the Credit Reference Agencies requesting this.

Example letter requesting disassociation

Your address

Date

Dear Credit Reference Agency

Your reference : insert reference number of your credit report

Many thanks for sending my credit reference file. However, the data about Sally Anne Jones relates to my mother. I have since left home and have no financial connection with Mrs Jones.

Please can you create a disassociation between us, in order that financial data relating to her does not appear on my credit file from now on and vice versa?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

Miss Sally Jones

You may find that information is out of date, that debts that have since been paid are not recorded as being paid, or that a notice has been added in error, in which case you'll need to write to the Credit Reference Agency to request that they update your record.

Example letter requesting incorrect information be amended accordingly
