Debts = Stress
n Stress: An applied force or system of forces that tends to strain or deform a body.
A physical or psychological stimulus that can produce mental tension or physiological reactions that may lead to illness.
The dictionary definition of stress talks of forces and strains and pressures, and those suffering from stress don't need a definition to tell them what they are - stressed. But stress can be caused by a multitude of factors.
As human beings we have the tools to deal with daily stress, but when stress grows over a period of time, this can be difficult to handle. Long periods of stress can cause ill health, poor productivity, lack of energy and enthusiasm and increased anxiety and worry; and therein lies the spiral of stress. The more you worry, the more you get stressed and the more you worry... and so on and so on.
Stress management strategies
Recognise the symptoms of stress. And when you feel it 'brewing' do something to counteract it. Laugh, sing, run, walk, visualise being somewhere else and, if you can't let go of the feeling of being stressed, seek help. There is no shame in being stressed and asking someone to advise you on how best to make it go away. Other ways to reduce stress are to:
Relax, enjoy music, visual yourself doing something relaxing, be it sunbathing on a beach somewhere or fishing by a quiet lake. Make time to do this at least once a day.
If debts or tasks are building up, PLAN and you'll increase the feel good factor. If you make a list of actions to take in order to complete all the tasks and pay all the debts and then make sure you do one or two things on the list per day, you'll get things back under control, ticking tasks off as you go.
Avoid drinking too much caffeine, fizzy drinks, alcohol and smoking as these do not alleviate stress. Stress-busting foods include anything rich in B vitamins (tuna, whole-wheat products, almonds, brown rice, broccoli, peas, lentils, eggs, soya, marmite). These foods can help our nervous system function better and deal with stress more efficiently. Stress can reduce our levels of iron anaemia symptoms, including lack of energy and impaired memory. So choose iron rich foods such as broccoli, green leafy vegetables, red meat, cocoa and pulses to help boost your own bodies defences against stress.
Exercise. Even if you have 101 things to do in the space of a day, you'll get through things alot quicker, with a lot more focus if you take just half an hour to go for a walk or run. It energises you and helps you deal with stress better.
Think positive even when times are tough. You know that you'll get through this stressful period and that negative thinking only impacts the stress levels and makes you feel worse.
Say no. Give yourself a break. If you don't have time or don't want to do something, don't succumb to the pressure. Put your foot down and say no from time to time.
