Student Debt Rises Over £14bn in the UK
Total outstanding student debt in the UK rose to just over £14.6bn in 2005. Up by 18.7% on the previous year which rose by only 4% on the previous year.
However, many graduates repaid their loans earlier than they had to, with a total of £622.2m being repaid.
The new statistic for total debt, from the Student Loans Company, was up from £12.3bn the previous year, although the official student debt figure will be much higher when taking bank loans and credit cards into account.
A recent study estimated that the average student in England and Wales now leaves higher education owing £12,069. Those student loans then fall due once graduates are earning at least £15,000 a year.
